Exploring the Gay Hotel

Wooing gay travelers is big dollars these days. Hotels realize the power of the gay dollar and are starting to purposely target this market segment when designing their hotels.

Major mainstream hotel chains that currently actively seek the gay vacation dollars include W hotels, Morgans Hotel Group, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, Kimpton Group, and Wyndham Resorts. This is seen through some of their recent advertising campaigns.

How does all this tie into hotel design you may ask? Well I’ve noticed that most of these exclusively gay and gay friendly hotel properties tend to have bold, colourful, and often avante guarde designs that push the envelope. And they all seem to be always have great lighting schemes! Could there be a direct correlation between hotel interior design and the gay clientele they’re enticing? Perhaps sometimes deliberate, perhaps not even close, but either way I’m still in love with these gay sensitive, FABULOUS hotels…

One of my favorite new hotel brands is Axel Hotels, which cleverly advertise that they are “hetero friendly”. Located in trendy areas of cities like Barcelona and Buenos Aires, they provide fun, energetic, vibrant environments with great thought geared toward their target demographic. The pool in the Buenos Airies location for instance has a glass bottom, and is seen through a 3 storey atrium to the lobby below.

To sum up the point of this post, I think that hotel design geared towards gay guests is something interesting to keep an eye on, since they’re designed from a different perspective, and towards a more specific market segment. Hotels are becoming very smart, catering and designing to very specific niche demographics, and I think that is a trend that will continue to grown in the coming years.
