As a very small part of a very large design team, and despite seeing it first hand from countless site visits over the past year, I decided to head down to the grand opening of the new Vancouver Convention Centre this weekend.
The convention centre is built on a 3.25 hectare site just West of the famous Canada Place. It adds approximately 359,000 square feet of additional facilities to the existing 133,000 square feet of function space at the original convention centre. The building will be LEED gold certified due to it’s rigorous design development (Canada’s largest living “green roof”, protected marine habitat below, local materials, and too many other features to mention).
The project was done as a collaboration between LMN Architects in Seattle, and from Vancouver MCM Architects, MCM Interiors, and DA Architects and Partners.
The opening weekend for the public featured some light entertainment throughout the space, and exhibit halls and ballrooms were fitted out with displays to showcase the flexibility of potential usage for conventions, seminars, or other events that the facility can accommodate.
The views from this building, and it’s integration into the surrounding environment are spectacular and will be a welcome addition and landmark to the city.
Some images from courtesy of the VCEC website and also from Que Sengmany whom I toured the site with.
