Hotel Missoni Opens in Edinburgh

This a special post for me. I've been graciously provided these images from the recent opening of the Hotel Missoni in Edinburgh by the Executive Vice President of Brands for Rezidor, after running into him on a couple of occasions now. (Thank you Gordon!!!)Screenshot-1This is the first Missoni Hotel to open, and the concept is very exciting and something I feel embodies what good hotel design is and should be...an experience like no other. Screenshot-2

The first impression of the building is unique. It is so modern and so different than the surrounding historic buildings of Edinburgh, but somehow it also blends in due to its scale and colours, which don't compete, but compliment its' environ.

The lobby and entrance is just stunning. Mosaic tile work introduces the colours and patterns (in this case stripes) that unite the hotel throughout. Bold furniture choices make an impressions. A floating stair with a bold purple background is highlighted behind glass panels as though it is a showpiece on display.

The reception pods glow as a warm and special welcome for guests. The Macintosh chair seen in the foreground, a nod to the local Scottish roots, fits in perfectly with the modern decor.

The bar is colourful as well, with use of fun reflective surfaces, and attention to lighting details that create a lively ambience.

My favorite chair, the Knotted Chair by Marcel Wanders, is used as accent seating. Screenshot-14

Missoni style is carried into the restaurant, with Missoni patterned plates.

Even the elevator cab, somewhat like a powder room, is the perfect location for expression of bold colour and pattern. These stripes are loud and proud, and anyone can handle them in a small dose such as this because you're really only in an elevator for a very limited amount of time. Screenshot-8

A meeting room is both functional and expressive. This is a perfect room to use the Dean Ingo pendant by Moooi above the board room tables, as it plays on both the work aspect of the use of the room, and the drama of the setting, in a designer hotel. Another signature Missoni pattern, the flame stitch, is expressed in the area rug underneath. Screenshot-13

Guestrooms are playful and cheerful. Most have amazing views of the surrounding city and highlands. The wood floors are very classic, with area rugs at sitting areas to rest those weary feet. Screenshot-9Screenshot-10

A larger suite balances colour, pattern, and texture. Screenshot-11

Perhaps one of my favorite parts of the hotel is the guest bathrooms. Bursting with colour, they are an antithesis to the standard white, clinical bathrooms most hotels go for these days, and I love that. Screenshot-12

Missoni is going to be one of those fashion designer hotel chains that will actually work out and will have successful global expansion for several reasons. The style is international and can be embraced by all cultures. It has a history of craftsmanship and the colours and patterns come from a rich tradition and history that embodies the hand crafted spirit from which it was born. The important and practical part that makes it work for a hotel, is that the famous Missoni style of patterned fabrics were re-interpreted into commercial grade fabrics and finishes that would withstand hotel traffic.

The overall design is just wonderful and achieves it's aim of expression as stated on their website: “Bold, Passionate, Fashionable, Uniquely Missoni”

I look forward to the upcoming openings of Hotel Missonis in South Africa, Brazil, Kuwait, and many other unique locations to come in the upcoming years.
