Upcoming South Beach Gem - Mondrian

Nowadays most hotels are starting to look pretty much all the same. But the soon to be open Mondrian Hotel and Residences South Beach, designed by Dutch designer Marcel Wanders for the Morgans Hotel Group …well it has grabbed my attention.

Because the hotel isn’t quite open, renderings (quite realistic) show what is to come.

Lets start with the porte cochere. Usually they’re not too exciting. But dressing it up makes sense to create an unusual first impression. The overall theme of curves, and fairy tale inspired forms and motifs is introduced. I love the attention to detail in an otherwise overlooked area.
The lobby, with it’s breathtaking stair case will definitely be talked about. I’m almost positive this staircase will become as legendary as Morgans’ other hugely successful Delano Hotel in South Beach with it’s Phillipe Starck white on white on white color scheme which was so revolutionary when it opened back in 1995. This staircase is gorgeous!
Sitting areas in the lobby also almost look Alice in Wonderland to me. But with a more refined and lofty twist.
The guestrooms are really interesting too. Translucency and airiness through glass and gauzy dream like drapery is key to creating an open and flowing room. I really like the whimsical pattern combinations (organics, damasks, and sky backdrop to the artful bathtub). I also love the overscale turned column in the bathroom. I know, usually you don’t think of ADDING columns to a space. But somehow I love it, and it is a recognizable symbol that will be found throughout the hotel, in the lobby rooms, and pool area.
Now, how do I get tickets to go down and see it next year?
