These are the self describing words of the new Ames Hotel, a Morgans Hotel situated in the heart of Boston. My question is, have we seen too much hotel design where history clashes violently with modernism?
It’s true that a lot of hotels lately have used furniture and motifs that embrace historic references. But in this case, I think it is very successful because it is restrained and balanced in it’s proportion to the modern.
The lobby has retained it’s original mosaic ceiling, and a dramatic chadelier of hundreds of acrylic mirrors in branch formation fills the barrel vault ceiling.
The main focus of the design is simple and minimal. You have to really look to see how the historic is referenced, such as the subtle white tin ceilings above the reception desk.
Turned bed posts in polished chrome in the suites and lamps inspired by old oil cans are clever in the bedrooms.
